"Where should we do the photos?"
It's the first question I get. Every time. And honestly? It's a good question. Because the location isn't just a backdrop—it sets the whole mood. It's the difference between photos that feel like you and photos that feel like they could be anyone.
You want a spot that looks amazing, sure. But you also want it to feel right. Comfortable. Natural. Somewhere you can actually move around and be yourselves. Especially if you've got toddlers who refuse to stand still, or if you're seven months pregnant and the idea of hiking a mile makes you want to cry.
So here's my list. Six outdoor locations in Southeastern Connecticut that I recommend all the time. Each one has its own vibe. Some are polished and classic. Some are more raw and relaxed. All of them are beautiful.
What I Look For In A Location
Good light. Always. That's non-negotiable. I also need easy access and variety—different looks without having to pack up and drive somewhere else.
Shade is huge, especially with kids. Easy parking matters more than you'd think. And variety? That's what keeps things interesting.
Harkness Memorial State Park
275 Great Neck Rd, Waterford, CT 06385
Harkness is kind of the overachiever of photo locations. You get fancy estate vibes near the mansion and gardens. Open lawns for running around. And the shoreline, if you want that coastal Connecticut look. It's like three locations in one, which is why I love it.
For families, there's plenty of space for kids to actually be kids without the background turning into visual chaos. Aim for weekday evenings if you want that calm, golden hour magic.
Rocky Neck State Park
244 W Main St, Niantic, CT 06357
If you want a more natural, slightly wild shoreline feel, Rocky Neck is your place. The stone pavilion has great texture. The beach gives you that classic Connecticut coast look. And the boardwalk and marsh areas? Totally different vibe without even breaking a sweat.
This spot is perfect for families and couples who want things to feel relaxed and real. Less posing, more moving. Less "stand here and smile," more "walk toward me and laugh about something." The good stuff.
Founders Memorial Park
100 Coulter St, Old Saybrook, CT 06475
Founders is quieter. Calmer. Beautiful water views without the crowds of the bigger beach parks. If you're doing a maternity session and the thought of walking too far sounds exhausting, this is a solid choice.
The open areas and overlook give you clean, simple backgrounds. Nothing too busy. Just you, the light, and the view. Plan this one for late afternoon or sunset if you love warm, glowy light.
Connecticut College Arboretum
270 Mohegan Ave Pkwy, New London, CT 06320
Want that woodsy, romantic, secret-garden kind of feel? The Arboretum delivers. Trails. Trees. A pond that feels like you stumbled into a fairy tale.
Engagement sessions here are chef's kiss because the setting naturally encourages you to walk and talk and just be together. For maternity photos, it's gorgeous if you want something soft and natural. And families who like a little adventure? Especially in late spring when everything's lush, or fall when the colors are insane?
Caroline Black Garden
270 Mohegan Avenue
New London, CT 06320
This one's smaller. More intimate. And in spring? Absolutely stunning. I love it for maternity sessions and engagements because the greenery and blooms give you that soft, dreamy garden look.
It's also great if you've got younger kids. The smaller space keeps things manageable. No one's running off into the sunset. Everyone stays calm. Which, let's be honest, is half the battle.
